Abstract

This study investigates the significant issue of the shortage of qualified accountants in Malaysia, highlighting that many accounting graduates do not enter the profession despite the high number produced annually. This study aims to identify the key workplace factors influencing employment preferences among final-year accounting students at private universities in Malaysia, while also exploring the mediating role of self-efficacy in these relationships. Grounded in Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT), the research examines four independent variables: salary and benefits, career development, employer reputation, and working environment. A quantitative research design was adopted using a cross-sectional survey strategy. Data were collected from 250 students across five private universities in Kuala Lumpur through self-administered questionnaires, with statistical analyses conducted using SPSS and Smart PLS. The findings indicate that all workplace factors, other than the working environment, significantly affect employment selection preferences, and self-efficacy plays a vital mediating role. This study offers valuable insights for recruiters, educators, and policymakers aiming to improve talent retention in the accounting profession.
