Abstract

Academic stress has become an ineffaceable part of academic life. Because of its numerous ill-effects, there is a need to devise a mechanism to prevent its adverse influence on students’ mental health/psychological well-being. Based on a sample of 742 Pakistani undergraduate students, this research tests the effectiveness of academic virtues for minimizing the negative influence of academic stress on positive mental health. Enriching academic life, academic virtues permit university students to manage their studies, address academic challenges, develop social competence, advance in their field of study, and become career ready. Results indicated that irrespective of gender, age, and academic achievement, undergraduate students who experience academic stress, but apply their academic virtues (justice and positivity, wisdom and excellence, courage and cautiousness, and knowledge and purposefulness) to a greater extent are able to attain higher levels of positive mental health. The theoretical contribution and practical implications of the results are also discussed.
